Doing it all. As If.

I’m still trying to figure out how to do everything that needs to be done and be everything that everyone needs me to be. It’s freakin’ exhausting! I’m sure most mothers are struggling like I am. Or else, I’m the only one that can’t pull it all together, wrap it up and tie it up with a pretty Martha Stewart bow.

My house is a mess. My yard is a mess. Last night I had a dream that we had a housekeeper coming over and I was cleaning the house before she got there. So, clearly, that’s what I’d do and then I would just be paying the housekeeper to come over so I would be forced to clean before she arrived. I need a better, cheaper method of forcing myself to clean.

Wednesday I planned on having stir-fry chicken for dinner. I called home and asked my daughter to take the chicken out of the freezer. I should’ve known from the “Uh-huhs” I was getting that she wasn’t even listening. I got home late, after 6:30 and asked my husband “Where’s the chicken?” “What chicken?” Awesome! The chicken was still in the freezer. I was so happy that I took the time during my lunch hour to go to Wegmans to get the fresh veggies and bean sprouts for the stir fry chicken that we didn’t end up making.

My husband wants more exciting meals. He’s tired of the same old stuff. Guess what? Me too. But since I’m not home until late most nights I don’t have time to make gourmet meals. We are lucky to have a hot meal. Gourmet it’s not.

I’m sitting here typing this on my lunch hour at the kitchen table that is still sporting a Halloween tablecloth. In my fridge right now is the homemade Halloween cookie dough that I made last weekend. Yes, the weekend after Halloween. I’m hoping I’ll be able to roll out the cookies, bake them and maybe frost some before our daughter goes back to college on Sunday night.

I’m grateful that we have jobs and have food on our table when so many families are struggling. But I just want everything to go smoother. To stop feeling like I’m rushing from one thing to the next without having the time to appreciate anything.
