Guava What??
Wednesdays are great for Wordless and Wordful posts, but we decided to go a different route and create our own Wednesday fun. We figured what the hell. That’s how we started What The Hell Wednesday. Who are we kidding? That’s pretty much how we decide on almost everything. If you want to play along, grab our button on the sidebar, link up to us in your post and don’t forget to sign in to the linky below. Really, what the hell?
Last week J-Man had a report due on Cuba. Besides being the country famous for Ricky Ricardo, cigars, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the fact that the best man at my parent’s wedding 50+ years ago was a Cuban Gun Runner, I didn’t know a lot about Cuba. Now I know a little more.
This week, the entire 5th grade at J-Man’s school is celebrating Latin America Day. They will go from classroom to classroom to learn about the language, culture, and foods from different Latin American countries. Great! Well, except for the food.
Our school district has been very progressive in how they handle food allergies and being a parent of a child with food allergies, I’m glad, but it’s going to make things a little difficult for Latin America Day. Every class was assigned a different food to bring in as long as it follows district guidelines.
Here are the district guidelines “all food must be store-bought and clearly labeled with ingredients. Fruit cannot be cut at home or school; it must be cut and packed by the store.”
J-Man’s class was assigned “Guava”. Ya, Guava! WTH?? As far as I know, guava isn’t something that’s usually available already cut up in a fruit tray next to the grapes and strawberries, nor is it a popular ingredient in baked goods. You don’t really see guava cupcakes, guava cookies, or guava bagels. Except for guava juice, there isn’t a whole lot of guava items available.
Seems more like a practical joke on the parents. “Let’s see what obscure Latin American food we can assign and watch them scramble. Bwahahahaha!”
I’m sure someone will let me know that guava pancakes are available or guava brownies are available in the natural food section of our grocery store and that I’m lacking basic guava knowledge.
Hello, my name is Elle and I’m guava challenged.
