Where Do We Go From Here?

Where do we go from here is what a lot of people are wondering this morning.  This isn’t the post I was hoping to write, but it’s our reality whether we want it or not. I freely admit I’m terribly disappointed, and so are my children, but I refuse to give up or give in.

I confess that one of my first thoughts was to take down the American Flag that hangs outside my house because I was so disappointed in my country, but then just as quickly, changed my mind. I need that reminder, now more than ever, that no matter how the election has divided us, we must find a way to become united or we all lose.

When I woke up my son for school this morning and told him that Donald Trump won the election, He groaned. I gave him a hug, told him we will be fine and that the outcome doesn’t change who we are as people, as a family, or how we treat others. We will be okay because I refuse to give in to hate and fear. The election results do not define who I am, or who my family is. We will always go high and will strive to be the change that we want to see in this country. We will always be for equal rights for everyone and fight against hate.

To my beautiful daughters who were excited to be making history by voting for a woman for president, I say don’t forget that feeling. Yesterday showed us that we may have a way to go before a woman is elected president, but it will happen in our lifetime. Don’t let go of that momentum, don’t give up the fight. We are a force to be reckoned with and we will not go quietly into the night.

Today, I choose to remember the scores of women at Mt. Hope Cemetary in Rochester, NY standing in line for over an hour to visit the gravesite of Susan B. Anthony to leave behind their “I Voted” stickers. I will always be proud to be a Nasty Woman and it is up to us to decide where do we go from here.
